Curiosity. Focus. Connection. Cooperation & Collaboration. Wisdom.
Since 2005, Strategic Health Law has helped our clients thrive in an ever-changing environment. We excel at recognizing your resources and understanding your operations. We help you move your business forward while staying compliant. Our core values are curiosity, focus, connection, cooperation & collaboration, and wisdom.
Curiosity
How we define it
Curiosity is the desire to investigate a subject deeply. It is a drive to learn something new, a relentless need to explore fresh ways of seeing the world. An inquisitive nature that never stops churning.
How it plays out in our work
If you ever want to see a perfect example of an industry that never stops moving, consider healthcare for a moment. It is not only complex but impossibly dynamic, with new issues surrounding regulations and guidance popping up on a regular basis. Our collective curiosity for those changes may well be our superpower. We are enthusiastic to understand–and to help our clients understand–those developments. We also apply our curiosity to our clients’ business, happily going deep in the weeds to see how the law applies to each of them. The goal is to offer good counsel so you can make equally good decisions.
Focus
How we define it
Mind if we parse the word “focus” for a moment? As a noun, it tends to signify clarity and understanding. (Which is what we help our clients achieve.) As a verb, it often means paying particular attention to something. (That’s us too, as we offer sustained care and attention in a very specific, particular area of law and industry.)
How it plays out in our work
We are a firm with a clear focus. We are not generalists. Over time, our focus on the healthcare industry has given us deep insights into the legal environment and a refined ability to gauge–and advise on–legal risk. We are not litigators who provide regulatory advice on the side; we are laser-focused on being managed care compliance lawyers. This makes us unique. This focus also means we are also skilled contract negotiators who understand in depth our clients’ needs and potential risks.
Connection
How we define it
When we talk about human connection, we mean the bond that forms between people when they give something of themselves and build trust over time. Human connections make people feel happier, work harder, and get smarter. It also allows for better collaboration and a collective sense of belonging.
How it plays out in our work
We feel strongly about the way we connect with our clients on a personal level. We love that some of our best client relationships are long-term ones. We look at longevity not only as a flattering, meaningful sign that a client values our counsel but as a deeper insight into how we become trusted advisors. The longer we work with you, the more valuable we can become as we fine-tune our ability to anticipate and advise. Our work with some clients is so long-standing, we have become a source of institutional knowledge.
Cooperation & Collaboration
How we define it
Ever consider the difference between cooperation (working together to support one another) and collaboration (working together towards a common end)? We prize both whether we’re working within the firm, with our clients, or with other service providers.
How it plays out in our work
We cooperate by working diligently, effectively and respectfully with diverse groups of people. We build consensus when making decisions and assume shared responsibility when collaborating. In terms of client cooperation, we can become an extension of our clients’ in-house legal depts. When building a legal perspective, we incorporate feedback from stakeholders in all corners of the business (from finance to privacy). Our interest is in representing each client as a whole, which requires understanding of that company’s inner workings. We are effective contract negotiators because we are practical, easy to work with and thrive in a team setting. We keep our clients’ best interests at heart when helping them work through complex negotiations with vendors. Finally, all SHL clients are firm clients–every team member is equally committed to every client.
Wisdom
How we define it
To be wise is to take vast amounts of experience and accumulated knowledge and translate it into good judgment and sage advice. Wisdom translates into insight.
How it plays out in our work
On the occasion of our 20th anniversary as a firm, we feel like we have gained our wisdom the old-fashioned way: by having accumulated vast experience and eagerly building our knowledge over a long time. We’ve seen a lot in this industry over 20 years. We have a track record to be proud of, one we built one client at a time. We see nuance. We understand dynamics, be they regulatory, cultural, or political. We put ourselves in our clients’ shoes and tap into that wisdom to help them overcome their greatest challenges.
